SUMMARY:Launching New Project ASPYRE EUROPE
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to announce the launch of our latest initiative\, ASPYRE EUROPE\, an expansion of the highly successful ASPYRE project\, which was implemented in Romania from 2022-2023. The launch event will take place on Wednesday\, 11 September 2024\, from 15:00 to 17:00 at the Centrul pentru Tineret\, Strada Iuliu Maniu nr. 1\, Cluj-Napoca. \nASPYRE’s Active Youth Forum\, 12 November 2022. Over 100 youth from Cluj and Neamt counties spent two full days learning how to be active citizens\, forming youth advocacy groups and designing strategies for continued engagement. Facebook & Instagram: @project.aspyre\nWe invite you to join us in celebrating the launch of ASPYRE EUROPE – Actions Supporting the Participation of Youth through Relevant Education in Europe. At this event\, participants from the original ASPYRE project\, including youth\, educators\, and decision-makers\, will share their experiences and insights\, offering a glimpse into their hopes and expectations for the new initiative. ASPYRE EUROPE is dedicated to empowering more young people to actively engage in democratic processes and public debate\, shaping the future of their communities. \n  \nWhy Attend?\nYouth participation in democratic processes remains alarmingly low\, with young people often underrepresented and disillusioned by the lack of trust in political institutions. One of the main challenges to Romanian democracy is participation\, particularly in terms of voter turnout\, in which it ranks among the bottom 25% of countries in the world (IDEA 2023: Romania). ASPYRE EUROPE addresses this gap by partnering with teachers and youth workers in Romania\, Italy\, and Bosnia and Herzegovina to implement a series of activities designed to educate\, equip\, and empower youth. Over the next two years\, the project will create platforms for young people to have their voices heard\, engage meaningfully\, and contribute positively to society.

SUMMARY:ASPYRE Instruire Profesori

SUMMARY:Vulnerability and the Power of Privilege
DESCRIPTION:The Covid-19 pandemic affects us all\, whether we live in Sweden or South Africa\, whether we’re managing a big multinational corporation or working as a bartender in the local pub. The virus does not discriminate. However\, it does affect us differently depending on our existing circumstances. There are certain conditions that make some people more susceptible to getting seriously ill if infected. Meanwhile\, some are more dramatically affected than others when a lockdown is imposed. These factors lie mostly outside of a person’s control\, such as age\, ethnicity\, socio-economic status\, living conditions\, underlying health conditions\, country of residence\, employment\, and much more. \nHow differently is this crisis experienced for someone who has a safe and steady income\, vs. someone who is losing theirs? How differently is this pandemic experienced by someone who is considered in the “high-risk” group\, vs someone who is not? How differently does the lockdown impact the quality of life of someone with direct access to a garden\, vs someone living in a small apartment in the city with no access to outdoor spaces\, or for someone without a safe place to call home? How differently does the current situation affect working parents of young children\, vs professionals who are single or childless? In essence\, what has this pandemic taught us about privilege and power dynamics until now\, and how can we learn from it in order to better address these inequalities in the future? \nEach speaker represent uniquely different groups who are deeply affected by the crisis\, in different ways.

SUMMARY:Trust in Political Leadership and Democracy in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:In order to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic\, state leaders from Scandinavia to the Balkans and beyond have imposed significant and unprecedented restrictions on citizens’ rights and freedoms. \nWhile the virus does not discriminate\, the pandemic affects people differently depending on their existing living and health conditions\, access to health care\, information and network. Vulnerable groups are made more vulnerable\, as an ever increasing number of people are finding themselves unemployed or at risk of losing their income. Many politicians are taking this opportunity to mobilise support by placing blame on foreign powers or supranational institutions\, attacking minorities and vulnerable groups\, and positioning themselves as “war-time leaders” in order to generate sympathy and respect. \nFor some political leaders\, this approach seems to be paying off\, but what implications might it have for democracy and its legitimacy? What can policy makers do to actively address issues of concern to their citizens in an integral\, responsive and truthful way? How can politicians gain trust and respect among citizens\, without pointing fingers and shifting blame? What is the role of civil society\, academia and media in counter-acting the negative tendency of scapegoating and avoiding responsibility? And how can we as active citizens work together to foster trust\, solutions and resilience in our communities? \nThese are some of the questions that will be raised through facilitated discussion between a small group of experts and practitioners across Europe. The main aim of the webinar is to initiate a thought- provoking conversation\, and contribute with rational\, respectful and informative public debate in a time marked by fake- news\, conspiracy theories\, scapegoating and weakened democratic institutions.
